John has been a gardener since he was a small child. He is a retired child psychologist who has lectured around the world on improving services to children with mental illness. In 2018, he became disabled after contracting West Nile disease, and had to sell his small farm and move to the city. In 2023, after buying a group of VEGO raised beds, he was able to resume gardening, using his cane in one hand and a hoe in the other.
